Ever wondered what if things would have been other way around? What if Taj Mahal was in the Himalayas? What if Times Square was right in front of you every morning you open your window?
Graphic designing is a process of making such fantasies a reality at least virtually by combining textual and visual content and presenting ideas.

That is the reason whole branding and advertising world runs on it. The process of giving your fantasies and beliefs a shape of reality. Graphic design serves as a helping hand to many domains. Following are few major functions in Graphic design:

Brand Identity, Advertising, Packaging, Album Covers, Film and Television Graphics, T-Shirt/ Clothing designs, Website UI (Look and feel), Mobile Applications UI, Digital banners/ads etc.

Principles of Graphic design

Just having the knowledge of using tools won’t make you a Graphic Designer. Following are the main principles to be kept in mind while making any artwork:

Alignment

alignment

Alignment gives the layout an order. It makes the artwork sharp and the layout looks connected hence pleasant to eyes. Aligning the objects in design eliminates messiness and makes it look clearer.
The elements in a design seem connected to each other only if the alignment is done right. Even if the design is imbalanced, giving it, proper alignment makes it look balanced. A designer should play with alignment till it doesn’t feel right.

Repetition

Just like Chorus and Refrain lines is that part of any song which is repeated several times just to keep that sense of connection to the story or title of the song similarly keeping repetitions in design keeps connected all different elements in a design. Repetition is a very important principle of design as it maintains consistency hence making it visually appealing.

For example, in a multipage document repeating color shapes, texture, fonts, texture and other elements gives the whole artwork a language and mood.

Proximity

Proximity is a grouping of elements used in the design such as shapes, images, and text. It adds unity to the design’s layout. If organized well, the one is able to see a good relationship between the elements.

Proximity guides the user where to start reading from. Proximity doesn’t mean the elements should be put together but they should have a good relation among them.

Contrast

Contrast is a very important principle of design because it highlights a particular element in the design. Carrying a complimentary design scheme whether in typeface, shape or in color gives contrast to the design. The designer can guide the reader throughout the visual for where to focus in the beginning. Giving contrast stands out the elements which you want to highlight or want to use as the attracting element.

White Space

White space doesn’t literally mean white color space, the blank space in any design is referred to as white space. It gives clarity to the message. Helps to bring the attention of the reader to specific elements thus guiding him throughout the visual.
From designer’s point of view, it also gives room to play with elements. White space keeps the design simple and simplest things are most difficult to make but they always win.
